Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)

AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) was first reported in the United St, ates in 1981. Since the beginning of the epidemic, an estimated 944,306 people have developed AIDS in the United States.  AIDS is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), a virus that destroys the body's ability to fight off infection.

People who have AIDS are very susceptible to many life-threatening diseases, called opportunistic infections, and to certain forms of cancer. Transmission of the virus primarily occurs during unprotected sexual activity and by sharing needles used to inject intravenous drugs.

AIDS cannot be cured, but if caught early can be treated with drugs called protease inhibitors.  As well, if you think you have been exposed to HIV/AIDS you can take emergency medication to prevent the development of the disease.
